Privacy
Nosy. Not creepy.
OI! is local-first. It has no account, no tracking and no cloud. This page says exactly what it reads and keeps.
What the app reads
- The frontmost app. Only during a session, and during work hours or breaks if you turn those modes on.
- The window title and document name. Needs the Accessibility permission, which onboarding explains before macOS asks.
- The current browser tab's site. Via Apple Events for Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Opera. OI! asks inline first and never triggers the system prompt from a background check. Firefox works from tab titles only.
- Keyboard timing. Only with Stuck check on: when you last typed. Never which keys.
- Calendar. Only with Settings → Workday → Calendar on. Event titles and times, read locally.
What it never does
- Record keystrokes, take screenshots or record the screen.
- Send what you do anywhere. Voice lines ship inside the app; nothing is fetched while it runs.
- Buddies, if you turn them on, talk only to Macs on your local network. They share your name, eye mood, timer and caught count; your task only if you choose to. Never apps, window titles or sites.
What it stores
In ~/Library/Application Support/OI/ on your Mac:
history.json: daily totals, also per hour, with app and site names. No window titles, no URLs.jar.json: your distraction jar.learned.json: what you marked “Actually relevant”.plan.json: plan items and breadcrumbs, if you use them.
Export, clear, or turn history off in Settings → Privacy.
Payments
Purchases go through Polar, which handles checkout, tax and license keys. OI! checks your license key with Polar when you activate it and about once a day after that, sending the key and an anonymous ID for your Mac (a hash, not your serial number). It also checks getoi.app for updates. Those are the only times the app itself contacts a server, and nothing about your activity is ever sent.
This website
No analytics scripts, no cookies, no third-party scripts. Fonts are served from this domain.
The server counts two things: downloads of the app, and the app's daily update check. Each count keeps the file, the app version and the country, and nothing else: no IP address, no browser details, nothing that tells you apart from anyone else. That's how we know roughly how many people use OI!.
