Get OI!

You're on
Reddit again.

OI! is a tiny Mac menu-bar app. Tell it what you're doing. It notices when you wander, nags you back to work, and tells you when you've been at it too long.

Reddit?

Fascinating. I don't remember Reddit being part of “Fix the budget bug”.

Back to work

How it works

You said you were fixing the bug.

You start a session by saying what you're doing. OI! watches which app and site are in front, not what you type, and scores each one against your task.

  1. VS Codebudget.pywork app
  2. GitHubIssue #212 · Totals off by a centwork site
  3. Python docsdecimal — fixed point arithmeticdocs

Escalation

First it watches.
Then it judges.

Drift is a score, roughly seconds spent somewhere that isn't your task. Real work drains it fast. So a quick look at the news is free. A long one is not.

  1. 0

    Focused

Nothing. A calm eye in the menu bar.

  2. 1

    Suspicious

The eye glances sideways. That's all, for now.

  3. 2
    hmm.

    Drifting

A tiny “hmm.” by the menu bar, your window or your cursor. Clicks go straight through it.

  4. 3

    Caught

A card, top right: back to work, actually relevant, or 5 more minutes.

  5. 4

    Explain yourself

“I got distracted” puts the window you were in back in front.

  6. 5

    Chaos

Full-screen lime and a sound. Only if you turned on Firm mode.

OI! starts from what you said you were doing. When it's wrong, one click on “Actually relevant” teaches it.

How it decides, in this order

  1. Things you vouched for“Actually relevant” counts for this session, and for similar tasks later.
  2. Your task names it“Reply to Slack” makes Slack work.
  3. A task word is on screen“ESP32” in a YouTube title makes that video work.
  4. Distracting apps and sitesReddit, YouTube, X, news… you can edit the list.
  5. Relevant apps and sitesEditors, docs, GitHub, design tools.
  6. Everything elseNeutral. It adds up slowly.

Distraction jar

⌥Space

Give the thought
to me.

A thought shows up mid-task. Press ⌥ Space from anywhere, type it, hit return. It goes in the jar and comes back at your break.

With nothing running, budget bug 45 starts a 45-minute session instead. (Optional, in Settings → Starting.)

Break mode

Focus too long? Now you're the problem.

OI! also watches the other way. When you've been heads-down for too long, it tells you to go away. Five minutes away from the keyboard counts as a break, whether you meant it or not.

  1. 50 min“You've been staring at this long enough.”
  2. +10“Go get water.”
  3. +15“I'm serious.”
  4. +20“I said stop. Twice.”
  5. every 5Until you actually go.

With Break coach on, it suggests things to actually do, and notices when a break turns into YouTube: “That's not a break.”

127 lines in eight voices, recorded once and shipped inside the app. Nothing is downloaded while it runs. Voice is off by default and goes quiet whenever your mic or camera is in use. Filthy asks you to confirm, and it isn't on this website.

Ways of working

Simple out of the box.
A coach if you ask.

Every extra is its own switch, off until you turn it on. Onboarding asks once. Picking Simple turns them all off again.

The loop, nothing else. Type the task, pick a length, go.

“Not bad. Could be worse.
Has been worse.”
— OI!

Buddies New

Bring a witness.

Working next to a friend, in the office or the library? Open a room. They type a four-digit code. Now their eyes sit next to yours in the menu bar, and anyone can send an OI! when someone wanders.

  • Same Wi-Fi only. No server, no account, nothing on the internet.
  • Shares the eye, not the screen. Your mood, timer and caught count. Never apps, window titles or sites. Your task only if you say so.
  • Encrypted with the code. Next time, trusted buddies join with one click.

Privacy

Nosy.
Not creepy.

What it looks at

The app in front
Only during a session, or during work hours and breaks if you switch those on.
The window title
Needs Accessibility. Onboarding explains why before macOS asks.
The browser tab's site
Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera. It asks first. Firefox works from tab titles.
Keyboard timing
Only if Stuck check is on. When you last typed, never what.

What it never touches

  • Keystrokes
  • Screenshots
  • Your screen
  • Your activity, uploaded

The one exception is Buddies, which you switch on yourself: it talks to Macs on your own Wi-Fi, and nothing else.

What it keeps, on your Mac

  • Daily totals, per hour, with app and site names
  • Your jar, learned rules, and plan if you use one
  • No window titles. No URLs.

In ~/Library/Application Support/OI/. Export it, clear it, or turn history off in Settings → Privacy.

Your distractions stay on your Mac.

This website doesn't track you either. No analytics, no cookies. Fonts are served from here.

Pricing

Try all of it for 14 days.

Download it and everything is on: every mode, every voice, Buddies. No account, no card, no key. After 14 days, pick one of these. Or don't: OI! stops watching, but the timer, break reminders and the jar keep working.

Reasonable questions.

Does it read what I type?

No. It never reads keys. With Stuck check on, it notices when you last typed, not what you typed. It never takes screenshots either.

Is this a site blocker?

No. It doesn't block anything. It asks what you're doing and judges accordingly. YouTube is fine if the video is about your task.

What happens when it's wrong?

Click “Actually relevant”. It stops for this session and learns it for similar tasks. You can see and delete what it learned.

Which browsers?

Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Opera report the site. Firefox works from the tab title only.

Is there AI in it?

Not right now. Everything is a plain, predictable score on your Mac. If an AI option ever arrives, it will be optional and off by default.

Will it embarrass me on a call?

Voice goes quiet whenever your mic or camera is on. The cards still show up. You'll deserve them.

Do the thing.
